Second
Time Around (Paul O’Brien)
I was sitting on the eight fifteen
Didn’t care too much for where I’d been
When I heard a voice
Call out down the hall
I didn’t pay too much heed
But it sounded like a man in need
And I picked up on
The last thing that he said
“Conductor, conductor please
I’m begging on my bended knees
Can’t you just
Turn this train around?
Conductor, conductor sir
Won’t you take me back to her?
And I’ll be true
Second time around.”
I never threw a second glace
Sure I’d get a second chance
If somewhere down the line
I’d drop the ball
And I went on day to day
Breaking hearts along the way
Never thinking
I would ever call
Later in another time
I was thinking about this life of mine
And felt that I’d turned left
Instead of right
I knew I’d have to make a start
Sorting out this weary heart
When those words
Came back to mind
